20 February 2003

Dear friends,

From the funds given for baby Mohammed's heart surgery, we were able to help sponsor another emergency newborn case from Gaza. Baby Karam had his heart surgery in Israel this week, and today passed a critical point as he was successfully weaned from the mechanical ventilator and able to breathe again on his own. Here is an excerpt from Phil Berg's report:

Karam had a blocked right ventricle [a chamber of the heart], and they put a shunt in place that is allowing for better blood flow from his heart to his lungs. The surgery went very well and they are optimistic about his full recovery. He is very tiny and therefore will need close care for at least another week in ICU. Karam is the first child. They live together with extended family, in one room. Abu Karam ("father of Karam") does not have work.

Doctors will be watching in the coming months whether Karam's right ventricle will grow and start to function normally. If not, he'll eventually need another surgery to enable him to live with only one ventricle. Such children can grow up and marry, but always have a weak heart.

Thank you, Father in heaven, for sparing Karam. We ask you in your mercy for new life for his right ventricle, and for all your best for his future.

Jonathan
