| Dear friends,
The phone rang this morning and a gravelly-voiced man told me that his
firstborn baby son had a heart defect and was in critical condition in
a hospital in Gaza. The new father had gone from office to office for
twoweeks in a vain search for help. "I don't know what to do,"
he said,
beginning to weep into the phone.
From his voice I knew this was an older man, yet only now had his first
son been born. I asked how long he'd been married. "Five years,"
he said. "For 24 years I've been in the military [PLO] in Lebanon
and in Algeria. I was also in prison in Israel. Five years ago I came
back to Gaza and married a local girl."
Next I spoke with Rambam, a large Israeli government medical center
on thebay in Haifa. Their pediatric cardiologist immediately agreed to
treat the baby, and asked that we bring him without delay. The hospital
management then agreed, also without hesitation, to charge only about
one-fifth of the normal cost, as they've done for us in the past with
other Palestinian children.
I called the father back and told him that doctors in Haifa wanted to
help save his baby. "That's where I was in prison," he said.
Tomorrow morning the baby will be on his way there, as old adversaries
unite in the effort to save a precious life.
Please pray for the baby; his name is Hussein. And as the Lord leads,
we do need help to cover the one-fifth share of the medical expenses,
which amounts to $2500.
Yours sincerely for Jesus' sake,
Jonathan Miles
