| Dear friends,
Three months ago I wrote you about a late-night visit to a baby boy born
in Gaza with transposed great arteries of the heart, blue and struggling
to breathe on 100% oxygen in an incubator, so newborn that he was not
yet named.
The next morning that baby--by then given the name Mohammed--was rushed
to Israel, where a hole was opened between the chambers of his heart by
catheter to allow oxygenated blood to reach his body. This immediately
stabilized him, but doctors had doubts about his neurological condition
after finding that his skull had somehow been fractured. Mohammed returned
home to wait.
Last week I went to his home and found him in a little rocker crib in
a bare room, connected to a tall oxygen cannister. Neurologically he looked
great, smiling and following family members around the room with his eyes.
But at the least stimulus he began to cry and turn blue. The relief provided
by the hole in his heart was no longer adequate, and a phone call to the
Israeli hospital revealed that Mohammed was again at immediate risk of
his life. We rushed him back in, and Wednesday he underwent major surgery
to switch his arteries. Tonight he is in the pediatric ICU, still on the
ventilator, doctors struggling to keep him stable. Please pray with us
that God will complete the work of redemption he has begun in Mohammed's
life.
There are also children that medicine cannot help. A half hour ago a
man left our home sobbing and staggering down the road, after hearing
that doctors have little hope to cure the metastatic bone cancer of his
ten-year-old son Jihad. Please pray too for a work of redemption in this
young life.
