Shada Returns Home To Gaza

Yesterday I walked into Shada's room and found her sitting in her crib, 'talking' on her mom's cell phone. She gave me a quick look that said, "Don't talk to me now, I'm busy!"

Shada has made a full recovery and is happier than ever. There are no longer tears for the camera. As soon as she sees it, she presents her best pose.

Today, a healthy Shada and her mother returned to Gaza. On the way back, I learned that Shada's mother has 10 children. All nine of them and her husband were back in Gaza anxiously awaiting Shada's return. On our way back down to Gaza this afternoon I asked her how she has such a sweet and happy personality with 10 children to take care of. She responded by saying that if you have a husband that helps you--a good husband--it isn't difficult.

I was really sad to see them go. I am really looking forward to their return to Israel for one of Shada's check-ups. Thank you to everyone who made her successful surgery possible. Please continue to pray for this family.

Shada Shining

I saw Shada just a few minutes today, but I'm glad to tell you her face was shining and she smiled at us. That's a big difference to the last blog, isn't it?

Unfortunately her mother wasn't present. So I only can give you this short, but good new: Shada is fine!

Thank you for every prayer for this cute girl and her mother. The Lord is working and I'm sure he will keep doing it.

Jumping Up And Down 48 Hours After Surgery

As I walked through the halls of the hospital this evening I ran into Shada's mother in the ward. I knew that Shada had been extubated yesterday; however, I didn't know that she would skip the intermediate ICU and be moved into the ward today.

As I turned the corner and saw Shada, I was amazed. I have never seen a child recover this quickly. Not only was she in the ward, but she was standing up in her crib, jumping up and down. She looked as if she didn't even have open-heart surgery less than 48 hours before. Her oxygen was perfect and her energy was up, but her mood wasn't. I tried numerous times to get a 'happy' picture of her, but it wasn't going to happen. Her mother tried to wave a shiny, bouncy headband before her, but that didn't work. Her mom put it on her head, and just as I was snapping the picture, she tore it off.


Shada's mother, on the other hand, was beaming. She is so grateful and happy that her daughter is healthy. Please continue to pray for Shada's overall recovery.

Smooth Surgery

I was called down to the children's ward late this morning to pick some stuffed animals for Shanaw, Kale, and Ali. As I walked through the doors I ran into Shada's mother who was obviously very worried about her daughter. She told me that one of the doctors told her that when the surgery was over, she would be moved into the ICU any minute. We walked down to say hello to some of the other new Gaza patients and then quickly returned to the corner of the hospital where we usually wait for patients.

A few minutes later one of the doctors walked by and asked who we were waiting for. When she heard we were waiting for Shada she told us that we missed her. She had already been taken into the ICU. While we were saying hello to the other patients, Shada had been brought up from surgery. We then had to wait nearly 40 minutes for them to allow us into the ICU to see her.

Gigi was visiting the hospital today as well and accompanied Shada's mother into the ICU once we were allowed in. We were told that her surgery was smooth and she was doing really well. This brought tears to her mother's eyes.

Tomorrow they will try to remove her breathing tube and wake her up. Please continue to pray!

Surgery Scheduled for Tomorrow

Shada arrived to the hospital last week and was scheduled for surgery, but due to a cold, her surgery was postponed. She is now scheduled to have surgery tomorrow at 8 AM. She seems to be a very happy and playful little girl. She kept wandering into the hallways of the hospital as we continually had to chase after her and bring her back into her room. She seems like a very sweet and friendly little girl. Please pray for a smooth and successful surgery tomorrow.

Surgery Delayed Due To A Cold

Today we went to visit Shada. She was scheduled to have surgery today, but it is delayed because Shada caught a cold. Every day a nurse cleans the infection from Shada's throat, so that she will heal more quickly and can have the surgery soon.

The Wall of Division Finally Yields

Late last night Shadas parents called to inform us that they still didnt have permission to enter Israel. This morning nothing had changed. It was almost 11 AM before security called to tell us that Shada and her mother finally had permission to cross into Israel. Unfortunately by this time I was in Tel Aviv and wasnt able to make it to the Gaza border to greet them as they crossed. When I arrived they were sitting in the shade patiently waiting. As I helped her into the van Shadas mother continued to thank me for taking her to the hospital.

Upon our arrival, Shada and her mother were shown their room and some initial tests were taken.

Some of the other mothers were a bit timid as they greeted her. It may take a few days for Shada and her mother to really make themselves at home in their new surroundings.

Shadas surgery is scheduled to take place tomorrow. Please pray for her surgery and also that her mother will find support amongst the other mothers surrounding her. This is a terrifying time for any mother, but it can be even more difficult for someone feeling alone.
