A living testament

It was a joyful surprise this morning to find that little Layan had returned to Sheba Medical Center for a follow-up appointment. This sweet baby was discharged only last week after having been hospitalized for the first full month of her life. During that time she received a major heart surgery and needed a lot of time to recover and gain weight. While Layan was in the hospital, we had the opportunity to get to know her mother well as we had the pleasure of sitting by her side for many hours.

When I found Layan and her parents today, she was receiving an echocardiogram and EKG to get a clear visual of how her heart was looking after surgery.

Once the tests were complete, a wonderful doctor entered the room to speak with Layan’s parents. He shared that Layan is doing delightfully and that for now her heart looks great. He was not sure whether or not Layan would need further cardiovascular intervention in the future, but the hope is that she will not. While her heart looks good, it does seem that Layan needs to see a dietitian as she is still quite small. Once she sees the dietitian, she should be moving onwards and upwards.

After the appointments, I sat with Layan and her parents for quite some time. We enjoyed celebratory coffees as we doted on Layan who quietly cooed with happy contentment.

Her mother and I discussed a variety of topics, and she also showed me countless pictures of Layan and her older sister who were together at last. Um Layan expressed such joy at having her daughters together, but also said that she’s definitely tired as they both keep her occupied.

What a blessing it is to be busy with the heritage of the Lord after being unsure for so long about the survival of a child! Layan’s mother expressed deep gratitude towards God, the medical staff at the hospital, and to Shevet Achim.

A few hours passed and eventually it was decided that they needed a ride home. Bags and baby in tow, we hopped in the car and made a quick stop in Lod to pick up coworker Hannah to join in for the ride. As we drove south, the parents of Layan chattered in the back of the car as Layan peacefully slept under their watch.

Upon arriving at the checkpoint to Hebron we said our goodbyes to them. Layan’s mother with her sweet voice and thick accent commented, “Thank you so much! I love you so much!” All I can say is that we love this family in return! They are a precious family who are a constant reminder of God’s faithfulness to heal and sustain the little children He has skillfully created. Layan’s family and her life is a testament to Him!

May the Lord continue to sustain and bless this family in all things. All glory be to our Jehovah Rapha— God our healer!
