Newborn Ali found his way back into Sheba Hospital’s ICU just a few months after his discharge, and no one, including us, expected it. His mother had arrived before us, meaning our morning meeting was interrupted with a phone call – it was Ali’s mother telling us the news he was being hospitalized. My coworkers and I got in the car and got to Sheba Hospital as fast as we could.
Upon my arrival, I saw a very angry Ali in the middle of doctors getting samples to run tests. He did not like the poking, the prodding, the swabs, and especially the needles. Once the medical team left though, (and his mother placed him into my arms) he settled down.
From there it was mostly smooth sailing, he was all smiles and enjoyed playing with me and brother Zechariah.

We were later told by his cardiologist that upon arriving to his echo, they saw some growth and change in his heart that concerned them, specifically how his heart was seemingly outgrowing a Sano Shunt placed during his surgery. We also confirmed from his mother that he had run out of the medication Captopril two weeks prior, and were unable to find it in the West Bank, which likely also contributed to Ali’s decline.
