When we walked into the ICU this morning, we were surprised to see Liya’s room empty. Her mother met us a few minutes later and eagerly waved us toward the secondary ICU, where Liya was enjoying a nap in the peace and quiet of a private room.
Liya’s mom was proud to tell me that Liya has been breathing all on her own for a week now, and doesn’t need the ventilator even at night! This is a huge step for our tiny girl.
If Liya continues to grow stronger, she may go home very soon– “God willing tomorrow!” her mom keeps saying with a hopeful smile. Liya’s dad works in Israel so he can come visit often, but Liya’s mother is looking forward to the day when they will all three go home together to the rest of their family in Gaza.
