Mischievous Masa came with her father from their home in Bethlehem for an echo and EKG at Sheba Medical Center today. Upon finding them, four-year-old Masa was already receiving an echo. She was very well behaved and laid quietly during the lengthy and extensive imaging process. As soon as the echo was completed, Masa sat up and immediately grinned from ear to ear as we made eye contact for the first time.
It was at that moment I realized it was going to be a very busy hour or so with this spunky girl. After her echo she received her EKG which she also behaved exceedingly well for. But, soon after that, while waiting to speak with the doctor, she was wildly running everywhere.
Masa seemed to have boundless energy! She ran around with her new friend Dareen (another child in Shevet Achim), then they colored together for a while, and finally they stretched a slinky to its limit and belly laughed together when one of them let their end go.
It was a chaotic, but joyful time!
To see Masa playing happily with Dareen was a pure delight.
They entertained each other while Masa’s father and I spoke with a doctor. During her echo, it was discovered that Masa has a hole in her heart. This will require surgery in the coming months, but nothing seems too urgent at the moment. The doctor shared that he will be discussing her condition with his team, and they will share what they decide is next for Masa soon. For now, Masa needs to return in three months time for another echo.
Once we finished speaking with the doctor, Masa and her father said their goodbyes to Dareen and I as they made their way out to a taxi.
