As we woke up at 5am this morning to drive to the airport, Birhat and his mum fell asleep so that the drive was quite calm and peaceful. At the airport Birhat was in a good mood, now and then doing some of his happy “dancing moves” (shaking his little arms up and down, I think his mum told him how to do it). Maybe he knew that he was on his way back home.
Even though Birhat had a respiratory infection, I want to thank God so much that his surgery went well. Moreover I am so thankful for his beautiful transformation (especially regarding his skin color which was previously blue from lack of oxygen).
As he is now back in Kurdistan, let’s pray that he will gain strength every day and that he will continue to develop to a healthy and joyful boy!
It is a happy update to write after today’s cardiac appointment for Birhat: he has been cleared by the doctor to return to Kurdistan! Praise God that he has brought Birhat’s body into health. What a transformation!
I can’t forget seeing him when he first arrived in Israel; he spent days at home so unwell with a cold and was on oxygen. There was one particular episode I remember where he began to cough on some of his secretions, and his body became so distressed as he was unable to breathe properly. His little blue body struggled, as his oxygen levels dropped. Thank God this was over in a matter of seconds.
I also remember getting the phone call from the hospital to say we needed to bring him in for surgery. It was a joyous time of hope for his mum. Thank God for his faithfulness in healing Birhat.
Today, the doctor said that Birhat’s heart is looking good. He will need another surgery and/or catheterisation by the time he is 5 years old. This didn’t dampen his mother’s spirits, and as we left the room she squealed with happiness and broke into a little dance. It was so good to be able to share this happy time with her.
Thank God for Birhat’s healing, and also for the blessing we have had of meeting him and his joyful sweet mother.
Birhat was discharged today from the hospital after his catheterization! His amazing mother was so happy to come back to Shevet. She is always positive, because before the cath she was so happy she was going to the hosptial to have it done, and then today, coming to Shevet, she was so happy because she was coming back to the apartment! This gives you an idea of what a joy she is. We truly love both her and Birhat! We also received good news that he needs one more echo before being cleared to fly back to Kurdistan! Thank you Lord for your continued provision in this little one’s life!
Appointment with the Endocrinologist
It is always such a blessing in life when you meet someone like Birhat’s mum who is so joyful and quick to let go of the things which get in the way of her joy. She is such a pleasure to be around.
Today I accompanied Birhat and his mother for an appointment with the endocrinologist. Birhat is very small for his age and has delayed development and so the doctors have been keen to try and find out the reason for this whilst he is in Israel. Birhat was very sweet throughout his appointment showing off his giggles and his waving. He really is delightful. The appointments went really well. Please pray for Birhat as he awaits test results from the hospital and pray for his whole family that they continue to see Birhat as the beautiful individual he is who has been stitched together by our Heavenly Father.
When we arrived at the hospital with Wareen we met Birhat’s mom waiting also for an echo. During the echo mom was very happy and Birhat was moving his head and smiling; he was in a good mood. The doctor said that she is happy with the results of the surgery but he still needs some following check-ups because they couldn’t fix everything.
Also she said that it would be fine to discharge Birhat. So while Mateen had his cath, Birhat’s mom was always checking with us and asked if the discharge report were ready. She was definitely ready to come to Shevet.
Finally after hours of waiting we got all the papers and medications ready and could leave.
It was a really good day even though she had to wait long. Please pray for all of his next appointments as his heart disease is not the only problem he has.
Today I was very happy when I went to see our sweet Birhat. He was sleeping and mom welcomed me with a beautiful smile. Our lovely Birhat yesterday was extubated and today only had oxygen with nasal canula and NG tube. He is slowly starting with a feeding bottle, but it is going well with that. He has problem with his breathing. They did a chest x-ray and the found some liquid in his lungs, but his heart looks good. Mom is so happy with his recovery. She said to me that she hopes to come back to the Shevet house soon and she is so happy because her baby is doing great! Thank you, Lord! It’s amazing to see him change only a few days after surgery.
Please continue praying for this baby, and for his completely healing.
We are just so thankful to God that Birhat’s surgery was brought forward to today. Diana arrived at Sheba early this morning to meet with mum as Birhat was taken to the operating theatre. Despite the inevitable tears and worry for Birhat as he went in for surgery, Birhat’s mum was so happy today to know that he was having his life changing operation.
It was lovely to spend time with our Shevet families as both Aram’s father and Birhat’s mother waited as their children were in the operating theatre. Marya’s dad also was with us providing moral support. We were as often is the case in these times at the hospital, an unlikely bunch of people together. However, it was lovely to share in this time genuinely hoping for the best for each other.
In the early afternoon the doctor came out of the surgery and shared that it had been very successful. Some time later mum was able to be reunited with Birhat in the ICU and the nurse shared that he was doing well and may even be extubated today or tomorrow.
Looking at Birhat, his colour has already changed from the blue shade we have grown to know him as having. We pray for his complete healing and we thank God for allowing this little love to come and be with us in Israel and have this opportunity for life.
We had just gotten ready to go out to the beach this afternoon, when Diana received the news that our lovely Birhat can be admitted today! So we enjoyed the beach within a quicker run than usual and headed to the hospital in the early evening. After a smooth admission, they can now settle in first. Tomorrow morning, they hope to set him in the first spot for his really needed surgery. Praise God for that!
We really pray for this joyful and special child and his lovely mother. May they experience Gods peace and his strength.
Anna, Helen and I had just spent some time visiting and praying for Bilind when Birhat’s mum came round the corner. A smile from her and a hug from Anna then saw us following her to her son’s bedside. We had the oxygen bottle ready as Birhat needed it for his trip back to Shevet. He was to wait a couple of weeks until Sheba staff can proceed with his treatment. Sheba nurse Natalie prepared all the paperwork and fitted the oxygen to Birhat for us and we were on our way home. The best news being that little Birhat didn’t need extra medication and he has been declared bacteria free! Praise the Lord! He’ll be back in a couple of weeks to continue his treatment. Please pray his mum will settle in to the community well and will receive a lot of support from the others.
Birhat has remained in hospital since the time of his arrival in Israel. It has been delightful to spend some time getting to know his mum. She is a lovely young woman who enjoys taking many pictures with different filters and she enjoys sharing with us about her family. It must be a very daunting experience for her being in hospital surrounded by others who do not speak the same language as her and yet she really does seem to be taking it well in her stride.
Birhat is waiting for his surgery but currently has a respiratory infection. Due to this he needs to remain in isolation. As we are blessed with so many children from Kurdistan at the moment we are working hard with the hospital to try and come up with a plan which will let Birhat come home to be with the community whilst he waits for his surgery whilst also ensuring we carry out the necessary isolation procedures needed to prevent the spread of infection.
Please pray for God’s guidance in this situation. Please also pray for Birhat and his lovely mum as they continue to spend time in hospital. May she feel well loved and would God intervene when there are breakdowns in communication.
Today after a long wait in the airport – around two hours – we could see our three beautiful, new families. One of them was our little and sweet Birhat and his beautiful mother. When I saw him I was very worried because he looked so blue and also had a lot of congestion. Immediately when we checked him we called to the ICU so that they were waiting for us. During the trip to the hospital we put oxygen on him. In the beginning he cried a lot but later he and his mother fell asleep.
Finally we arrived at the hospital, and the ICU had everything ready for them; they put him through a lot of tests. His mother did not understand what was happening in the beginning. But later when I could call someone to help me with the translation, thank the Lord mom was more calm and at peace. In the afternoon the doctor performed an echo and asked a lot of questions to Mom. Birhat is so small for his age, he was waiting for this moment (arrival to Israel for his surgery) almost all of his little life. But thanks to the Lord they are finally here.
When the doctor finished with everything, Birhat could eat. He was very angry because he was hungry. But when I gave him his milk he was very happy and calm. It was very beautiful feeding him and also he helped me hold the bottle with his little hand. Please pray for this beautiful baby, for wisdom for the medical team as they plan his treatment and also for his mother to have strength and peace in this time far away at home.
