Ainda's Heart Surgery

There and Back Again

Posted on Fri, 08/12/2016 - 16:02 by Alexa Bigl

Ainda has been discharged and she and her mother have rejoined us in Jerusalem. Welcome back, Ainda! The doctors believe one of the medications Ainda was on to help her lungs was the cause of her increased heart rate. Now, her medications have been adjusted and she is doing much better. Ainda's mom told me Ainda is also eating her new prescribed diet from her special bottle much better.

After mother and daughter slept on the drive back to Jerusalem, Ainda was ready to play this afternoon! We are so thankful, to God, Ainda is here in Israel where she can receive fantastic medical interventions.

Please join us in continued prayers for Ainda and her mother.

Admitted for High Heart Rate

Posted on Thu, 08/11/2016 - 22:05 by Lorena Garzon

Today we brought Ainda to Wolfson hospital to have her checked, as our local nurses thought her heart rate was unusually high. We arrived in the morning and went to the children's ward. They did an EKG test on her and it looked as if something was not going very well and they explained to us she had a mild fever at 37.5 Celsius and her heart was beating very fast at 180/per minute. Her mom said that Ainda wasn't eating well the past few days also. Thank God we brought her early. Then, the doctor decided to let her stay at the hospital at least until Sunday for observation and to look for the cause of her tachycardia.

Ainda had a hard time staying calm and quiet as she usually is; instead she cried most of the time and it was hard to keep her entertained. While the doctor had us wait a while, Rebekah and I stayed with Ainda and her mother in a room. Ainda's cute laugh made us see how kids like her can smile even in the difficulties. It was like a lesson for us of how God's love is working through us and them.

Finally the doctor wanted us to bring her to the nurse's station for a blood test. It was very hard to find her vein and they tried in both her hands and feet. Eventually they had Ainda's blood ready to send for a test. After that, Ainda was put in her room and fell asleep.

We continue to pray for her treatment in the hospital. May God's healing hand touch her body so she can come back to the Shevet center.

Back to Jerusalem

This morning our hospital team of four had the opportunity to spend some time with Ainda! Upon our arrival, I heard the good news that our precious little Ainda can come back to our Jerusalem center with us today. What wonderful news, it brought us all great joy, praise the Lord!

During my time visiting dear Ainda, I saw she was very happy to play with her baby towel on her bed.
Due to that she has a congenital cleft lip and palate, the doctor requested we buy a special feeding bottle. This bottle will better allow Ainda to swallow her milk properly. I went to several shops at the hospital, but I was not able to find it. However, by the grace of God, our Jaffa hospital team was able to find it in the end.
After Ainda finished her inhalation treatment for her lung treatment, we headed back to Jerusalem. Please continues to lift Ainda and her mum in your prayers, may both of them adjust and enjoy their temporary home at our Jerusalem center.

A Joyful Soul

On Thursday, Ainda and her mother came to our Jaffa apartment to continue her recovery with us. However, after only a few hours Ainda was already back in the hospital, as she had developed a high fever. The doctors at Wolfson hospital took a blood culture and started her on a new antibiotic. I was curious to see how Ainda was doing today. Her mother had told me yesterday on the phone that she was doing a lot better, and today I was able to see it with my own eyes. The time I got to spend with her today blessed me immensley. What an adorable and joyful little girl she is, always giggling and laughing. She is not shy with strangers and easily makes new friends.

When I entered Ainda's room this morning, it happened to be perfect timing, as she was sent to an examination by the ENT doctor to assess her ability of correctly eating and swallowing, due to her congenital cleft lip and cleft palate. Even though she is almost ten months old, she weighs very little and the pneumonia she has been fighting was most likely caused by incorrect swallowing.

The two ENT doctors who examined Ainda won her trust immediately. Even though the procedures were not really pleasant, Ainda smiled and laughed a lot. She only cried and protested loudly when they had to hold her down to clean her ears. The examinations also included a hearing test, as the hearing can be impaired when children are born with a cleft lip and palate. After a while the doctors invited a plastic surgeon who discussed with them Ainda's case. They told us later that they would be able to fix Ainda's cleft lip and cleft palate, as she is now old enough to only need one surgery. However, it depends on the right timing and funding, which has to be disussed, as this will be a separate issue from the heart. When we said our goodbyes to the doctors, I felt that Ainda and her mother had been valued and taken seriously. They had cared for Ainda tenderly and understood that it would be a great joy for the mother if her daughter would not only return home with a healed heart, but also with a repaired lip and palate.

Back in the ward we waited to hear if Ainda would be allowed to leave the hospital, as she has been doing so much better. However, in the end we were told that the hospital would like to keep her a little bit longer. They ordered a special formed feeding device that would help AInda to eat and swallow better. And they started her on a higher calorie diet for her to gain more weight. Our dear little Ainda continued throughout the whole afternoon to smile and laugh. I am so thankful for the ways the medical team at Wolfson hospital cared for her today. Ainda is precious and her wellbeing matters. Thank you Lord!

Ainda Joins Jaffa Comunity

We went to the hospital today to visit sweet little Ainda. It was my first day spent with Shevet Achim and I was amazed by the love people there give to the kids. We just stayed for a short time, because Ainda and her mum were allowed to come home with us. Although Ainda is still sick with pneumonia she was given antibiotics so that there was no need for her to stay at the hospital any longer.

Instead of going back to Jerusalem they are staying at our house in Jaffa for a little while.

Please continue praying for precious Ainda and her Mum, may God bless them during this time of waiting.

Unexpected Admission

Last night our Shevet family went to the airport to pick up little, precious Ainda and her mum from Kurdistan, northern Iraq. We really opened our arms to welcome both little Ainda and her mum to join our big Shevet family here.

Due to the long hours of traveling, Ainda has come down with some sickness. She got a fever and short of breath. I went to check her at 1:30am, and I noticed her body temperature was high and heart beat was very fast. Her breathing also looked labored. I gave her back and chest percussion to help clear her lungs. After pressing a cold towel to her forehead, her fever cooled down.

This morning, she still looked restless and sick. It seems she did not feel better after we gave her medicine to relieve her fever. Therefore, we decided to bring her to Wolfson hospital to have a full check-up.
Poor Ainda was struggling and fighting while the doctor tried to insert her IV and get her blood draw to test. After some time of trying, the doctor decided to send her and her mum for chest x-ray first. The x-ray showed she has pneumonia. Ainda needs to be treated with antibiotics at Wolfson.
Before we left for Jerusalem, little Ainda went for her echo examination too.
Please join us in praying for our little Ainda and her mum, as they stay at the hospital for her pnuemonia treatment. May God provide them grace to adjust to the hospital environment and give them new strength daily, amen!

Ainda Coming Soon to Israel

Posted on Mon, 08/01/2016 - 01:37 by Jonathan Miles

This precious nine-month-old child was born with two holes in her heart, as well as a cleft palate. Her humble, young family can hardly comprehend how to provide all the care that Ainda will need.

Thank God, doctors in Israel have agreed to help her, and we hope to have her with us in the first week of August.
