Beautiful Aseel Returns to Gaza

Posted on Mon, 10/26/2009 - 00:00 by Donna_Petrel
Little Aseel was dismissed to return to her home in Gaza today! Everyone is amazed at how quickly she has recuperated from last week's surgery. She was wandering the halls happily with her mother until late afternoon, when she began to tire of her mother saying they would be leaving soon -- at three years old she realized it was too long a day to be going home "soon!" At last when the dismissal report was finished and it was time to load the car Aseel's disposition changed, and she was excited to be going to her home. Please pray that she will continue to heal, and grow into a beautiful woman with a beautiful heart for the God who has healed her.

Aseel Breathing On Her Own

I was in the ICU this morning when Aseel's mother (young, but tall and stately) came in to check on her sleeping daughter the morning after surgery. The ICU head, Dr. Sion Houri, gave her the good news that Aseel had just been weaned from mechanical respiration, and could be expected to awake in just a few moments.

The joy and satisfaction at the care they are receiving extended not only to Aseel's mother, but to a group of five Gaza mothers who each have a child in the ICU after heart surgery in Israel! Thank God for this living example of how we can love our neighbors as ourselves.

A Long Wait, and a Good Result

As I entered Wolfson Hospital this morning for the first time I saw three women, in various stages of their lives, sitting outside of the Intensive Care Unit for children. One was a grandmother with concerns for her grandchild's life, one had a seven month old little boy on which the doctors had just completed surgery and the other was Aseel's mother (pictured above at left) awaiting her daughter's surgery. Each of these women, with concerns for their own children, were providing loving support for the others.

Aseel's mother was the youngest of the three women, and she waited not knowing if the doctors would operate today or not. As we sat with her word came that Aseel was indeed going into surgery. Time seems to stand still when a young mother waits to hear a good report from such a frightening surgery. We prayed not only for God to heal this little girl but also to comfort the nervous mother.

After four hours we received word that surgery was successful! A band placed on Aseel's pulmonary artery two years ago has now been removed, and the large hole between the ventricles of her heart successfully closed. We waited together for the first glimpse of Aseel returning to the ICU from the operating room:

Tonight Aseel is recovering in the ICU, and the surgeon Lior Sassoon told us he expects Aseel to go on to a full and healthy life.

Aseel Reaches Israel, To Surgery Tomorrow

Three-year-old Aseel finally got her permission to leave Gaza today, one week after her original surgery date. We are grateful that Israeli doctors agreed to immediately accept her, and in fact put her on the surgery schedule for tomorrow morning.
Our combo of Simantov, an Israeli born in Haifa, and Erica, a Palestinian Christian from Bethlehem, made the journey this morning to bring Aseel and her mother from the Gaza border to the hospital, along with five other Gaza children coming for diagnosis and follow-up. Simantov describes the mother as very friendly, and says that Aseel slept all the way to the hospital, where she was "quite well-behaved until they started jamming needles into her arm."

Aseel has grown quite a bit since we last saw her in the hospital about two years ago:

If she waited much longer without surgery she would likely become inoperable. Please join us in thanking God for this opportunity and for the willingness of the doctors to make time and space for her, and ask Him to cover her surgery with grace and healing.
