Deeman's Heart Surgery

Deeman Finds Joy at the Sea

This morning Deeman went into the hospital for a PPD test, but since that was over quite fast she and her mother were able to come to the sea with a few of the other families.

And what a peaceful day at the beach it was. Most of the families who come from Iraq have never seen it before, and how wonderful it is to watch their faces light up when they see the hugeness of it for the first time! Even Deeman, who isn't often smiling or happy, simply lit up when she began to take in her surroundings, and her face just shone with wonder as she looked from the sand to the sea to the blue sky above. She was fascinated with the sand and delighted in picking up a few shells to show off to her mother.

She also quite enjoyed the ice cream we got after our picnic lunch!

It was a lovely day for all, and I'm so thankful for the chance these families had to see the sea, perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity for them. Something about the bigness and beauty of it helps us to look beyond ourselves, to remember how small we are. I pray that God would use this day and it's sweet memories to lift the eyes of these dear women and children to his mercy. That amidst the fear and difficulties they face they would see that God's love is so much bigger, that he knows their fears, hears their cries, and he is the giver of all life.

Deeman Sleeping Tonight in Jerusalem

Today at the hospital when I went in to see Deeman, she and her mother were in good spirits. Deeman is still very blue, but is feeling much better now that her fever is gone. The hospital thought she was in good enough shape that she could come back to Jerusalem tonight, and tomorrow she will return for a PPD (tuberculosis) test.

Deeman is such a sweet little girl, on the way home she smiled and actually giggled a bit as she played with a little toy I gave her. It was good to see her happy! Her mother also has a really tender spirit, doing all she can to make her daughter comfortable.

Deeman is still very tired ( as you see she fell into peaceful sleep when she got home!) and her heart very ill. Pray that God would take away all the anxiety in this little girl and her mother, filling them with His peace as they wait. And please pray that the doctors would have great wisdom and discernment in dealing with this precious little girl and her broken heart.

Deeman Immediately Hospitalized

Fair-haired Deeman early this morning was on her way to Wolfson Medical Center for her first echo and evaluation. At first she appeared still a little sleepy, but as the day wore on and the evaluations continued it became evident this little lady was quite ill. In addition to the severe heart problems that keep her hands, feet and lips so blue from a lack of oxygen, she was running a high fever. I was amazed to see she remained as willing to interact with people as she did.
It is plain to see the concern and the stress in Deeman's mother's face.

Deeman bravely endured all the poking and prodding as Mom looked on anxiously, and doctors decided to admit Deeman immediately to the hospital. The family is from Nineveh province and their dialect is somewhat different than the other Kurdish families now with us, so the lack of accurate communication is difficult and unsettling for them.

Please keep Deeman and her mother in your prayers. Deeman needs a speedy intervention from the Great Physician, and her mother needs peace to trust that God has everything under control.

Very Blue Deeman Reaches Israel

Not quite three-year-old Deeman reached Israel tonight, looking very blue and a bit wary until I won her over with a bag of chips. After a night's rest in Jerusalem we'll bring her and her mother to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon for Deeman's first examinations on Monday morning, and will keep this page updated with the results.
