Hala Heads Home

Posted on Mon, 09/11/2017 - 22:19 by Alexa Bigl

After a search throughout the hospital today, we managed to locate baby Hala and her grandmother for a final visit with this family before they headed home to Gaza. Hala's grandmother was excited to see us and wanted to take many pictures. Precious, tiny Hala is all healed and brightly looked around the room as I rocked her in my arms. After just a few minutes, Hala's eyes began wandering closed and she was asleep in no time.

I wanted to hold on to the beautiful little girl all afternoon, but eventually I set her into her hospital crib where she continued to peacefully sleep. Her discharge letter and medications took a couple more hours to be prepared and then Suhail and our new co-worker, Ben, brought baby and grandmother back to the Gaza border.

We said goodbye to Hala and grandma - very happy to have met them and to now call them friends.

We are so happy this family can be reunited with Hala, her heart healed and doing very well. The Lord worked a wonderful healing and we pray this touches the emotional and spiritual hearts of Hala's family. We hope and pray this journey in Israel is a doorway for all of Hala's family to receive healing from the Lord. They have experienced great pains over the years, including family members' deaths and a difficult life in Gaza. The Lord knows all and we lift this family into our Father's arm praying He will reveal Himself to them.

Moved to the Children's Ward

Hala is continuing to progress very well. Margarita and I saw her and her grandmother this afternoon, right as she was getting moved from ICU into the children’s ward.

The nurses reported that she has been feeding well, and has had no post-surgery complications at all. As Hala was getting settled into the ward, I was able to speak to her mother over the phone. She was so pleased to hear the good report, and said multiple times that she was so thankful for the kindness of the Shevet team. I said it was our pleasure, and that we do it because Messiah tells us to love others.

If things continue to go well for Hala tonight, and she passes the doctor’s assessment tomorrow morning, she could be discharged tomorrow afternoon! She would then be driven home to Gaza, and handed back into the loving arms of her family.

Hala is Progressing Well!

Today my co-workers Yousif and Suhail visited Hala to check how she was progressing after yesterday’s surgery. They reported that she is making great progress, and is improving quickly. She is extubated, and was actually due to move out of ICU into the children’s ward this evening (after we left). Her Grandmother was very happy to receive a visit, and has been so appreciative of all the help she has received.

Successful Surgery!

Hala's surgery happened today. The doctors happily reported everything is looking exactly how they want! They excised the portion of Hala's aorta that was narrow and reconnected the ends where the diameter was correct. So now the entirety of Hala's main blood vessel is healthy and the correct size; praise God! She will be extubated later today or tomorrow, God willing.

Hala's grandmother was all smiles as her granddaughter was wheeled back into her ICU room. She excitedly pointed at Hala telling me surgery was finished and wanting me to see how beautiful the little girl was looking. We encouraged her to take some time to get tea while the ICU set Hala up and got her stabilized on their machines.

When we had a chance to visit Hala and grandmother later in the day, we really enjoyed hearing her tell us about her family and seeing pictures of her lovely children and grandchildren. Hala has twin older siblings who love to play in the ocean waves and we got to watch videos of them running and laughing; it was a touching picture into this families' lives. Hala's grandmother's love for her family was shining through as we spent some time with her. It's amazing to consider this is just a small picture in comparison to our Heavenly Father's love for us, including Hala and her grandmother. We pray they are surrounded by the tangible love of our Father as they continue this journey towards Hala's repaired cardiac condition.

Hala comes to Israel

Posted on Sun, 09/03/2017 - 22:42 by Alexa Bigl

Hala arrived to Sheba Thursday night after we received word this one month-old baby girl needed to be emergently brought to Israel from Gaza. Hala suffers from coarctation of the aorta, meaning her main blood vessel has a very narrow section. She was on life-sustaining medications in Gaza and requires a risky surgery to correct the defect. God's hand was clearly present as the child was brought into Israel on the eve of a Muslim holiday, Eid Al-Adha. She remained stable throughout the weekend in Sheba's pediatric ICU.

Today, Hala's grandmother was very happy to have our co-worker Suhail visit her. She was able to have more explanation about the plan for Hala and have some questions answered. Hala was scheduled to receive her surgical correction today, but the surgeries before her were longer than anticipated and Hala's surgery has been delayed until tomorrow. Please join us in praying for Hala and her grandmother. We will be praying for peace and comfort as they are away from home and going through this journey towards Hala's healed heart.
