Lanya’s first visit to Wolfson

Last night we welcomed Lanya and her mother into our community in Jerusalem. They arrived safely at Ben Gurion airport together with Shadyan and her mother, and they were blessed with a smooth transition through security without any problems.

Today we went to the hospital with Lanya and her mother. I put her in the car seat which she didn't like very much, but when her mother was sitting next to her everything was fine again soon. It also made me realize how little she weighs, something I am not used to as my youngest son is already two years old. After an hour drive we arrived safely at Wolfson Medical Centre. It was Lanya's first time, but more visits are to come.

A day of waiting and going from one place to another started. Our first stop was at the children's ward for a general assessment. Lanya underwent everything quietly and let the nurse do her job without complaining. While we were waiting I was talking to her softly, and while she was staring at me with her dark brown eyes she grabbed my finger. She is such a sweet and precious little girl.

The next stop was for an echo to be done. We had to wait a little bit before it was Lanya’s turn. The doctor was able to confirm the initial diagnosis. She has a large Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). The good thing is that the doctor confirmed that Lanya is a candidate for a complete surgical repair.

There was more to be done. Some blood had to be taken, and that was a difficult job. Lanya didn’t like this part at all, it hurts and she was crying loudly. Unfortunately it had to be done. I have a lot of respect for the doctors and nurses taking blood of those little children. It is so hard. Finally there was enough blood to run tests and we could go on to the next item on the list. A PPD and a chest x-ray were the last things for the day.

Lanya’s mother loves and cares so much for her. It made me think of our heavenly Father who cares so much for us! It is this God who gave Lanya as a gift to her parents, a precious gift she is.

To Come

Lanya is a one-year-old girl from Kurdistan in northern Iraq. She was born with a heart defect known as Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), which means that there is a hole between the right and left ventricles of her heart. This means that oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood mix within her heart, causing the rest of her body to receive less oxygen than it should from her blood. We hope to see Lanya and her mother here with us in Israel in the near future so that Lanya can get the help she needs.
