Laveen Returns to Jerusalem after Successful Cath

Posted on Thu, 11/17/2011 - 00:00 by Stephanie Ventura

One day after a successful catheterization, Laveen and her mother said goodbye to Wolfson Hospital and hello to Jerusalem. They were actually ready several hours before Misha, fellow Shevet member, and I arrived at the hospital to pick them up. There they sat, bags packed, and obvious irritation on their faces. After apologizing for not being able to come sooner, all was forgiven and we were on the road. Laveen's mother sat in the van with eyes glued to the window. Her curiosity spilled out with questions and comments, "What city is that?" "Look at the little trees!" "Where are we?" "How long of a drive is this?" "How beautiful!" "Take a picture!" She was like a little girl going on a roadtrip. Sometimes, I forget that this is a journey of many "firsts" for our Kurdish guests, including seeing the land of Israel. I enjoyed sharing this experience with her. Meanwhile, Laveen slept contentedly beside her. When we got home, Laveen settled right back into house life as if she owned the place. I love her personality! She is very independent, somewhat stubborn, but also a gracious hostess. At a farewell party this evening, Laveen went around the room handing a piece of candy to each person. For Laveen, the plan is to wait in Jerusalem until Wolfson calls her back for surgery. This, we all hope and pray, is right around the corner!

Smiles and Kisses Before Surgery

I met Laveen and her mother this morning at the hospital before her catheterization. We had around three hours to spend together before having to send her off, and it was a time well spent with smiles, laughs, and intimate conversations about her mother

Laveen Admitted for Catheterization

Within a matter of minutes Laveen and her mother went from making a tasty lunch in Jerusalem to packing their bags for the hospital. We received a phone call from the Wolfson Medical Center asking that Laveen be admitted as soon as possible because she is now scheduled for a catheterization tomorrow afternoon. After looking at the results from the echo, doctor decided that Laveen would be best served with a catheterization before heart surgery, which will allow a more precise diagnosis. In any case, this was exciting news for her mother because she knows this is one step closer to full health for her daughter.

When we arrived at the hospital we were quickly taken to the nurse

"Lovely" Laveen Needs Catheterization

Laveen, who has picked up the nickname 'Lovey', was very interactive with people and toys upon arrival in the echo department at Wolfson Hospital this afternoon. Misha brought lunch to us since it was about 1 o'clock.

Dr.Tamir had planned on making Laveen surgery first tomorrow. She was given medicine to make her sleep, which made her move as though she was intoxicated. Although comical, we had to follow her and watch her closely so she wouldn't fall and hurt herself. Saying she resisted the effect of the medicine would be an understatement! Laveen was still resisting sleep when it was time for the echo to begin and required an additional dose which only made her groggy and giggly.

As the echo continued, Dr. Tamir said 'Lovely' could not have sugery tomorrow after all, because she will first require a catheterization for doctors to be sure they are doing the right thing for her. We are not sure when the catheterization will take place but Laveen will be back in the hospital tomorrow for a check-up and bloodwork. Thank God she is a strong little girl, but we may need a lot of help holding her down for bloodwork tomorrow.

At the Israeli/Jordan border today, Laveen and her mother waited patiently as security personal asked them several questions. It was obvious on Laveen

Two and a half year old Laveen and her mother flew into Jordan tonight from northern Iraq, and tomorrow Lord willing we will bring them across the Jordan River into Israel. First stop will be the Shevet Achim center in Jerusalem, and then on to their first visit in the hospital in Israel. We will update this page after their arrival.
