Patiently Waiting in Jerusalem

Posted on Thu, 11/01/2012 - 12:58 by Kelsey Cannon

After her echo this past week, Lya is currently in Jerusalem waiting to hear from Wolfson for a surgery date. While she waits, she continues to win over everyone she comes into contact with. It truly is a treat to interact with Lya and she seems to be enjoying her interim time here. She has one of those rare and cherished personalities where one look or smile from her makes one feel as if they are the most special person in the room. And while it is a blessing that she and her mother are such pleasant and patient souls, please continue to pray with us for a timely surgery date for dear Lya.

Lya is an adorable little girl with a soft smile and bouncy curls. She has such a curious spirit, all day her questions were repeated like a broken record. We took her to her first echo test today, and after thorough inspection, it was revealed that she has a large VSD

Lya Expecting an Echo Tomorrow

One look into those big, brown doe eyes and I was a goner. Lya just has to be one of the sweetest children in appearance and countenance that I have ever had the privilege of meeting. This little girl arrived to the Wolfson Medical Center after traveling an exhausting distance from Kurdistan to Israel over the past couple of days. Yet despite the kilometers she had covered, she truly did not seem to be tired. In fact, her personality was about as bubbly as the colorful soap prisms which danced over her head (courtesy of all of us enthusiastic volunteers eager to win her over).

But there was more serious business to attend to today than enjoying the ceaseless entertainment that are bubbles. Lya was at Wolfson to begin the first part of her medical assessment before moving forward in her journey to receiving a new heart. But this aspect to her day took quite a toll on Lya. Her screams of protest against the poking and prodding by the various medical professionals could be heard all the way down the hall of the children

"How beautiful the Kurdish children are!" my wife Michelle exclaimed upon meeting the latest arrivals. Indeed almost-two-year-old Lya was a cutie as she crossed the Jordan River this morning with mother in tow.

And after arriving at the hospital for her first exams, Lya quickly coerced our Shevet coworkers into entertaining her:

More later tonight on the results of Lya's first exams at the hospital.

Lya Coming on Eve of Second Birthday

Lya's case is marked urgent, as a large hole between the ventricles of her heart leaves her vulnerable to developing pulmonary pressure which could soon leave her inoperable.

Lya will turn two years old in November. We have applied for her visa to Israel and hope to have her with us in mid-October.
