Longing For Her Daughter

Can you imagine being a nineteen-year old mother with a child needing heart surgery in a foreign country? What would you feel? What fears, insecurities, and hopes would be harassing your mind and heart? I cannot know.

When the pediatrician in Kurdistan first noticed that Sima had a heart defect, he did not tell her young parents. He feared they would panic. When they eventually were notified, the opportunity for heart treatment in Israel was also soon presented.

Sima arrived in Jerusalem yesterday evening with her young mother. When the van chugged up Prophets Street, like an old plane ready for the hangar, ten volunteers from Shevet were standing roadside, shivering in the Jerusalem cold, ready to welcome them into our community.

Sima had her first battery of tests today at Wolfson Hospital, in a southern suburb of Tel Aviv. The tests today included an echocardiogram, vital signs, chest x-ray, blood work and EKG.

The Urgency of Sima's Surgery

Baby Sima turned one year old this week, with her future threatened by a large hole between the ventricles of her heart. If it is not closed urgently she will develop pulmonary hypertension that will leave her inoperable. Doctors in Israel assess that there is still time to help Sima. We hope to have her in Israel within one week.
