We picked up just-turned-one-year-old Islam and her mother today at the crossing point from the Gaza Strip into Israel, and safely delivered them to the Wolfson Medical Center in Holon for life-saving heart surgery.

Back to Gaza With a New Heart

Islam was sent home today from Wolfson Medical Center in Tel Aviv after a completely successful heart operation, just three weeks after arriving in Israel
from the Gaza Strip. When I approached Islam in her hospital crib to see how
she was doing I said a cheerful "Marhaba" (an Arabic greeting) to her, at which she looked me straight in the eye and stretched out her arm to me. Impressed, I politely shook this one-year-old's hand to the amusement of those watching. Islam is a very smart and alert little girl, certainly now after being healed by this surgery. I continued to speak to her in English while she persistently reached out her hand to take hold of me, each time pulling my hand toward her. We enjoyed one another's company for several minutes and the other Palestinians in the room found our exchange a cute spectacle.

Islam is safely back home now, back with her family, where she will be able to grow in these impressive gifts and experience a new life.
